Are you thinking on bringing your ride to Mexico?
Once you have moved to your new home in Puerto Vallarta, usually the next question is what about transportation, even when there are many ways of moving around town, with public service, taxis and UBER already available, its always nice to have your own accommodation for that easy drive to Costco or any given day activity.
Well, pretty much there are 2 options.
There are eleven different car agency’s available in Puerto Vallarta:
Since Puerto Vallarta holds the 3th largest American community living full time in Mexico, it’s always common to find English spoken people that can assist you in every establishment.
There are different financing options available for foreigners directly with the car agencies.
The paper work you need to provide in order to apply for a new ride is pretty standard.
- Proof of address
- Official Identification
- Proof of income
- A Mexican party to act as legal co-responsible with the same documentation listed above.
You should know that to carry out an import procedure there are restrictions on vehicle models and brands, for this it will be necessary for the owner to request a temporary permit to remain in the country and transit within Mexico with foreign plates, which is given only 180 days per year.
In any case, you can only import a car to Mexico in a period of 12 months, if you want to import more than one car you would have to become a part of the Importers Registry.
It is important to know that when it comes to new or used vehicles, they can be imported as long as their vehicle identification number corresponds to the manufacturing number.
The border customs is the place where you can perform the import procedures, which will ask you for the following documentation:
- Title of ownership of the vehicle on behalf of the importer
- Identification of the importer
- Proof of address
- Digital photograph of vehicle identification number
- Vehicular invoice number
You must take into account that as all procedures, there are fees and taxes for different concepts that the customs will ask you to cover, adding an average total of $ 33,683.60 MXN, depending on the car model.
Your trip to Puerto Vallarta starts from the border of Tijuana, where you can take “La Baja” route, which is full of great natural landscapes. Ensenada is the first place to participate in this route that will take you south through the peninsula of Baja California.
During the trip do not worry about places to rest or stock up on gas or food, since while going south of Baja California you will have the opportunity to go through places like Vicente Guerrero, Cata Viña, and just halfway through Guerrero Negro, the city that divides the two states of the peninsula, following several typical towns of south Baja California, until your last option to take a short break in Loreto, before reaching La Paz.
La Paz has a ferry service that can take you to Mazatlan, a beautiful port city in mainland Mexico, at a distance of 240 nautical miles, with an estimated sailing time of 16 hours and an average cost of $ 3000 MXN to transport your car (cost may vary depending on its size).
From Mazatlan you can take the highway that goes to the state of Nayarit, as your next escape route to get to Puerto Vallarta.
Puerto Vallarta is still a beautiful town with cobblestone streets, therefore it is recommended to have a car with a considerable ground height, high cars or 4×4 trucks are advised, so you will have a greater comfort during your stay in Puerto Vallarta.
